While the changing of the seasons is not as dramatic here as it is in other places in the country, we can still celebrate the advent of spring. In fact, while northern states are just emerging from seasons of snow, we have some indications of spring that are uniquely Tucson. For instance, the wildflowers begin to bloom and reveal bursts of color, emerging along roadsides and in gardens. Trees and bushes join the display, adding their budding branches to the vista. Bright colors appear across the landscape, and the bouquets of the season follow suit, exhibiting the fresh attitude of a new season. This month, we celebrate all of the flowers of spring - and whether you have a special occasion coming up, or you want to send an arrangement "just because", Casas Adobes Flower Shop is the right place to call.

As an American holiday, Mardi Gras was birthed in Louisiana where most festivity still takes place. But the history of this over-the-top celebration begins thousands of years ago, with roots in pagan festivals honoring fertility and spring. These annual observances collided with Christianity when it came to Rome, and in an effort to lure people into the faith, the religious leaders determined a compromise. Lent is a period of fasting and repentance which takes place for 40 days beginning with Ash Wednesday. By scheduling the festival to culminate on the Tuesday prior to the beginning of Lent, celebrants could eat all of the meat, eggs, and dairy in their house prior to the fast - hence the name "Fat Tuesday". When France adopted the tradition, the name translated to "Mardi Gras". But how did it get to America? Read More about Why We Celebrate Mardi Gras »
