Speaking of succulents (above) the many varieties do have different standards of care. However, as a general rule will thrive in well-draining soil such as cactus soil, sand, gravel or volcanic rock. Allow the soil to dry in between waterings, or their roots may rot. Many succulents “hibernate” in cooler weather, but situating the plants in sunlight and they should begin to look much healthier. Most succulents require at least a half day of sunlight but don’t be afraid to give them a full day, as they are tolerable to arid climates.
Bromeliads (below) are colorful tropical plants are popular in our sun-drenched climate. To help them thrive, feed them a half-strength fertilizer every month during the growing season, and water by filling the cup at the base of the leaves. Empty any stagnant water and debris weekly.
